Licensed hypnosis shows weren't allowed in Bolton for 42 years until a decision was made to overturn the ban last year

Councillors will be asked to decide whether a ‘mind magician and hypnotist’ can perform three shows in Bolton this summer. Last year, Bolton council ended a 42-year ban on licensed hypnotism events in the town.

Under the Hypnotism Act 1952, local councils must authorise any show which includes ‘hypnotism, mesmerism and any similar act which produces induced sleep or trance’ which makes the person ‘susceptible to suggestion or direction’.

In 1982 the council was given jurisdiction to refuse or grant licences and decided it would not hear applications for such shows.

That was changed by a council decision in February, 2024 which allowed a licensed hypnosis show in the town for the first time in more than 40 years.

Now performer Colin Adamson has applied to the council for upcoming shows at The Railway, Chapeltown Road on June 14, Little Lever Conservative Club, Fletcher Street, (June 21) and Hollywood Road Sports and Social Club, Hollywood Road, (August 2).

Mr Adamson’s website describes him as a ‘mind magician and hypnotist’ and states that with more than 20 years experience, he is ‘a trusted performer in the field of hypnotism, magic, mentalism and stage craft’.

He said: “I believe in safe and fun entertainment. I follow the guidelines of the 1952 Hypnotism Act of Great Britain, and use it as a code of ethics when performing internationally.”

A report to be put before councillors on the licensing panel, said: “Following previous applications, enquiries were made with colleagues at the other nine Greater Manchester licensing authorities.

“All nine have confirmed they would consider applications and authorise hypnotism.

“Police have confirmed that they have no issue with performances of hypnotism following an application received last year.”

The licensing committee of Bolton Council will decide whether to allow the three performances at a meeting on Tuesday, June 10.
