The Greater Manchester destination 'in a different league' to Regent's Park
One visitor was blown away by the park and said it was in a 'completely different league' to one of the Royal Parks of London
Let’s be honest, June hasn’t got off to a great start weather-wise. After a sizzling May where we basked in glorious sunshine, the last couple of weeks have featured grey clouds and rain showers.
Yet according to the latest Met Office forecasts, that’s all set to change this week. The sun is returning and on Wednesday Greater Manchester can expect highs of 25C with not a rain shower in sight.
Thursday will see temperatures reach 23C with sunny intervals, although we could get some rain (well, you can’t have everything).
Saturday is a similar picture with slightly cooler conditions, however Sunday and Monday should be dry with sunny intervals.
So with that in mind, it’s a good idea to make the most of the good weather when we have it - and there’s no better way than with a trip to the park.
Alexandra Park in Oldham has gained a reputation for being one of the region’s best parks, receiving rave reviews from visitors.
This beautiful park is found on the edge of the town centre and is packed full of Victorian features, including a tranquil boating lake and the ‘Lion’s Den’, an ornate public shelter.
It offers plenty of things for visitors to do, including a play area for kids with a sand pit, seven free tennis courts, three bowling greens and also playground equipment for disabled children.
One reviewer, Kellie, wrote on Google: “Stunning park. Beautifully maintained. A real credit to the grounds people. Like the gardens of a stately home.
“Fantastic play area and lovely lake. Plenty of open spaces to picnic, play and sit down to admire the park. Lovely to walk/jog round too.”
Another visitor, Abby, wrote on Tripadvisor: “It’s a beautiful park that gives us a bit of greenery in a building dense area. We’ve been going to the park for about 4 years now. It's always lovely.
“The park is well maintained and has plenty of wildlife. There’s the boating lake full of different birds - we’ve seen herons…there are coots which we have watched grow from tiny babies to adults now, tons of pigeons that will take seeds from your hands, geese, seagulls and ducks. Walking around there are plenty of crows, robins and other little birds flying around.”
But one visitor even compared it to Regents Park in London - and said it was in a ‘completely different league’.
Richard D wrote on Tripadvisor: “Having experienced Regents Park in London, I can confidently say Alexandra Park is in a different league maintenance-wise.
“It's exactly the standard I'd expect a park to be in every way: beautiful colourful beds, lush green well-cut lawns, nice edges, etc. Regents "Park" by comparison looks like green belt land, I can only feel sorry for people who think that's a beautiful park, they've never experienced a proper park.”
