England boss Thomas Tuchel has told Jack Grealish he needs to be playing for a club in Europe if he is to rediscover his best form and force his way back into the Three Lions squad in time for next summer's World Cup.

Grealish is set to leave Manchester City during the transfer window after another disappointing campaign at the Etihad and could be left out of the Blues' Club World Cup squad to help facilitate a departure.

The 29-year-old started just one Premier League game after Christmas and made just six starts in all in the calendar year as his struggles continued, with his form on the wane since the treble success of 2023.

A departure is now seen as inevitavble this summer and Grealish has been told he needs to leave and look for a club capable of giving him games twice a week by Tuchel. Although the former Aston Villa attacker had a brief international renaissance in Lee Carsley's spell in charge, his last cap came in October 2024.

“I have maybe the same information as you that City are thinking of not taking him to the Club World Cup," Tuchel said of Grealish ahead of England's double header against Andorra and Senegal during this international break.

“So he needs to make himself available by playing. I think it’s one of his key strengths. To go every three days and get better and better with every minute that he has in his legs. That’s what is missing, nothing else.

“I love Jack for his personality and of course his talent. He is a very unique player who can handle big pressure on the field. He is never shy of pressure. It’s the opposite.

“He grows in big matches, but he’s a player who needs minutes and minutes and minutes and simply does not get them for a very long time. That’s basically everything. Nothing has changed.”

Asked if he had spoken to Grealish, Tuchel said: “I have spoken to him before the first international camp and very shortly after the FA Cup final, but not since then.”
