Sports giant JD has confirmed the opening date of its biggest ever store - and there are set to be some big surprises in store at the launch at the Trafford Centre this weekend.

JD's official website has now confirmed the date and details for the launch of the vast new sports store. And they stated: "We're goin all out for the opening. We mean big."

The date is now set for the official public opening event on Saturday, June 7 at 10am at the huge new location on Regent Crescent, close to Sephora and M&S.

They will also hold celebratory events across the following two weekends as well.

Telling fans what they can expect at the opening weekend on the JD blog, they said: "Get ready to see all the brands you love, the hottest styles, and mega in-store events at our biggest ever JD store."

They have teased that they are linking up "with your favourite names, some huge stars, and hosting some next-level giveaways across three weekends. Keeping that hype going strong."

On the opening weekend, there will be famous faces launching the Trafford Centre store, with official confirmation of who exactly that is on JD's social feeds in the coming days.

They wrote: "On the opening weekend of Saturday 7th June, head in-store at JD Trafford Centre, where we’ll be pullin up with some familiar faces who’ll be opening up the store, so make sure you show up early."

And they then teased: "Trust us, you don’t wanna miss this one."

There will also be challenges and prizes to win across the weekend, as well as exclusive in-store events with Adidas Originals, as well as giveaways with Crep and Manchester coffee institution Federal.

They've also teamed up with PUMA across the Saturday and Sunday, with giveaways and the chance to win a brand-new pair of PUMA Nitros as well as VIP tickets to Manchester City.

The following weekend, on Saturday June 14 and 15, will see a link up with MBC and Stanley for what is billed as "the ultimate customisation experience" for anyone buying a Stanley tumbler or bottle in store.

Plans were first announced for the vast new 42,400 sq ft superstore over three years ago.

But shoppers won't have to wait too much longer before seeing the "unique flagship".

JD Sports was first established by John Wardle and David Makin back in 1981 where they traded from a single shop in Bury.

They first opened the business as "John David Sports", but over time it became shortened to JD, a combination of the first letter of their names.

It has now grown to over 4,500 stores in 36 countries worldwide, amid a boom in demand for sportswear fashions from big brands like Nike, Puma and Adidas, hailing itself "the undisputed king of trainers".

The new JD will be the latest of a number of big openings and expansions being planned this summer at the Trafford Centre. As the MEN reported in April, a huge deal has been signed with fashion giant who is taking over the former M&S site on Peel Avenue.

It will see the arrival of new fashion store Bershka, while popular brands Zara and Pull & Bear will both be moving to larger stores on Peel Avenue from their current locations in the mall.

Those changes run alongside a number of other refurbishments and relocations taking place over the next few months in the iconic shopping centre.

Lacoste is relocating to a larger store, Hollister is being refurbished and Moss is relocating, among others. Gymshark is also set to open in the summer, at Upper Peel Avenue.
