Emergency services are in attendance at an ongoing incident on the railway line with trains from Greater Manchester stopped.

Police are currently dealing with the incident between Wigan Wallgate and Southport this evening.

Routes affected include those between Manchester Oxford Road, Manchester Victoria, Stalybridge, Wigan Wallgate and Southport.

All stations between Gathurst and Southport will not be served, with replacement bus services currently introduced. Trains may be cancelled or delayed, National Rail said.

Journey times extended by as much as an hour

Journey times will be extended by up to 60 minutes when using replacement road transport, National Rail said.

Tickets will be accepted on the following routes at no extra cost:

  • Merseyrail between Southport and Liverpool stations. At Liverpool customers can connect with onward Northern services to Wigan

  • Northern between Manchester Piccadilly and Ashton-under-Lyne (Please note there are no tram services between Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly, customers should utilise the free city centre buses)

  • TransPennine Express between Manchester stations and Stalybridge

National Rail issues statement

A statement shared this evening: "Emergency services are dealing with an incident between Wigan Wallgate and Southport.

"Whilst emergency services attend the incident, trains may be cancelled or terminated at and started back from Wigan Wallgate. All stations between Gathurst and Southport will not be served.

"Disruption is expected until 9.30pm."
