A stretch of the M60 was closed this afternoon after a crash which saw seven people taken to hospital.
Five vehicles were involved in the smash on the clocwise stretch of the motorway between junction 13 for Worsley and junction 14, for the East Lancs Road.
Traffic was held whilst emergency services responded to the 'serious mutil-vehicle collision.'
Two people were freed from vehicles by firefighters.
A total of eight casualties were assessed by paramedics, with seven being taken to hospital.
A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesperson said all had suffered what were described as 'minor' injuries.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just after midday on Saturday 7 June, fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the M60 clockwise between junctions 13 and 14.
"Three fire engines from Eccles, Stretford and Ramsbottom stations, as well as the enhanced rescue unit from Leigh, were quickly sent to the incident. The collision involved five vehicles.
"Firefighters safely extricated two people from their vehicles, with another six people involved. All casualties were assessed by paramedics from North West Ambulance Service and seven people have been taken to hospital."
The M60 was shut clockwise from junction 12 to junction 15 whilst crews dealt with the aftermath, with diversions in place. Queues stretched back to junction 9 for Trafford Park. Roads in Worsley were also heavily congested.

According to Inrix, 'trapped traffic is currently being released past the scene.'
Two people rescued by firefighters and seven taken to hospital
Two people were rescued from their vehicles by firefighters. They, along with the six other casualties, have been assessed by paramedics.

Diversion route
Drivers are being advised to follow the Hollow Square, Solid Diamond and Hollow Circle diversion symbols on road signs and follow the following route:
- Exit the M60 at J12
- Follow the M602 eastbound for approx. 5 miles
- At the M602 J3, take the first exit onto the A5063
- At the A5063/A6 Jct, turn left onto the A6
- At the a6/A66 Rbt, the A6 becomes the A580, continue on the A580.
- At the A580/A575 junction, start to follow the hollow circle diversion route symbol.
- Continue on the A580 until its junction with the A577.
- At the A580/A577 junction, turn right onto the A577 north.
- At the A577/A5082 Jct, turn right onto the A5082 north.
- At the A5082/A6053 Jct, continue straight and follow the A6053.
- At the A666/M61 Rbt. take the third exit onto the A666.
- Join the M61 east and follow for approx. 1 mile
- At the M61 J1 / M60 J15 interchange, rejoin the M60 clockwise

National Highways said:
The M60 in Greater Manchester is closed clockwise between J12 (M62/M602) and J15 near (M61) following a serious multiple vehicle collision.
All emergency services are working at the scene with Greater Manchester Police leading the response at this stage.
National Highways Traffic Officers are assisting with strategic closures on the approach.
Crews are planning to clear the traffic caught within the closure as soon as it is safe.

Traffic is also slow on opposite carriageway due to onlookers.
