A man is in custody after a police chase ended in a horror crash which has left a passenger critically injured.

A car 'made off' following a 'routine stop' by officers on Drake Street in Rochdale at around 6.15pm yesterday evening (Thursday, June 6), Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

Officers started to chase after the car, during which the vehicle being followed 'collided with numerous other vehicles', GMP said.

The suspected driver 'made off' afterwards and a male passenger suffered injuries described as 'serious' and 'life-threatening.'

A huge emergency services presence descended on the busy route, near the junction with Milkstone Road, with a cordon put in place in both directions.

Multiple ambulances and police vehicles, including officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, were seen conducting enquiries at the scene.

In an update issued this morning (Friday), GMP said a 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

He has been taken into custody for questioning.

The force are now appealing for any witnesses, or anyone who may dash cam footage, to come forward.
