Man dies after being hit by car which ploughed into Manchester shop and bus stop
A large cordon was in place on Monday night
A man has tragically died after being hit by a car which ploughed into a bus stop and a building in Manchester.
Police, paramedics and fire crews raced to the scene on Slade Lane, in Longsight, at around 8.10pm on Monday night (June 9).
Greater Manchester Police says it was called out to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a car.
The pedestrian, a 64-year-old man, sadly died a short time after the crash.
The vehicle involved came to a stop after hitting a bus stop, before smashing into a shop near the junction with Portland Road.
Officers arrested the driver - a 78-year-old woman - on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She remains in custody for questioning this morning (June 10).
Slade Lane was taped off on Monday night, with a huge cordon put in place.
Part of nearby Stockport Road was also blocked, with the police tape stretching over the Slade Lane Community Garden as horrified onlookers watched on.
Emergency services vehicles flooded the scene, with a number of ambulance vehicles in attendance, along with incident response units, police vans and the fire service.
It was reported that a car had struck a bus stop before ploughing into a commercial building, thought to be a shop.
Images seen by the Manchester Evening News appeared to show part of the shop wall had crumbled following the crash, while a bus stop was also wiped out. A car was seen in the centre of the cordon.
A GMP spokesperson said: "At around 8.10pm last night, emergency services were called to a collision between a pedestrian and a car on Slade Lane. It is believed that a collision has occurred between a pedestrian, a car, and nearby street furniture.
"The car shortly after came to a stop near the junction with Portland Road. Sadly, the pedestrian, aged 64, died shortly after.
"The driver, a woman aged 78, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She remains in custody for questioning.
