Manchester United youngster Chido Obi helped Denmark's Under-20s progress to the semi-finals of the Maurice Revello Tournament on Tuesday by scoring in their 3-0 win over Japan.

After stepping off the bench to score deep into injury time in the Danes' 2-0 win over Congo on Saturday, he was rewarded with a starting berth for the clash with Japan, and he repaid manager Mark Strudal's faith almost immediately.

The United striker, who came off the bench to score twice in the Reds' 3-1 win over Hong Kong on their post-season tour last month, opened the scoring with just five minutes on the clock.

With the Japan goalkeeper dawdling on the ball, Obi put him under pressure, robbed him of possession and tapped the ball into an empty net.

Not turning 18 until November, the Dane is playing in the Maurice Revello Tournament ahead of schedule.

However, his return of two goals and one assist in his first three appearances in the competition highlights he is not struggling up against more senior figures.

He started Denmark's opening game - a 3-3 draw with Mexico - and supplied the assist for their second goal.

They eventually won the game 5-4 on penalties after Mexico equalised for a third time with 97 minutes on the clock.

Whereas his goal against Japan was as a result of putting pressure on the goalkeeper and forcing him into a mistake, his strike against Congo was a low drive from outside the penalty area that crept into the bottom corner.

Ahead of the semi-finals taking place on Friday, only Saudi Arabia's Abdullah Radif (three) has scored more goals at the tournament than Obi. Denmark face Saudi Arabia at 1pm BST on Friday and France face Mexico in the other semi-final later in the day.
