'Never apply your hair mask in one place as you won't see results'
A beauty lover has explained that there are places you should not be applying your hair mask if you don't want your hair to end up looking worse than it did before
If you're using a hair mask on this part of your locks, one beauty lover has claimed that it won't work. Sarah, who posts on TikTok as @sarah_rosenblumm, started her video by saying: "Let's talk about hair masks and where you should be putting them," as she noted that many women are applying them completely wrong, regardless of what the mask itself is for.
Someone had asked her: "Should they [hair masks] go on the whole hair or just on the lengths?" and she responded with her advice. Sarah urged people to use products "correctly," regardless of what it is, because if you don't use your products properly, "you're not gonna get the results you're looking for".
Sarah shared that she's been educating herself on all things hair for over five years, and if you have the best products but you're using them wrong, your hair will look the same as it did before.
She said: "No matter what the hair mask is, and if your hair mask is for thin hair, thick hair, nourishment, hydration, softness, whatever it is, you always want to apply it from mid-shaft down.
"A good marker is to go from the top of your ear, down all the way to your ends".
She said that some would argue that you have to go from "root to end" because it says so on the packaging, but she recommends from mid-shaft for best results, as they're often "very heavy in consistency" or "at least heavier than a normal conditioner" which can weigh your hair down and have the opposite impact.
Sarah said they are "packed with lots of oils and lots of thick, nourishing ingredients" to "make your hair so soft".
However, "lots of oils going near your scalp can cause you to have oily roots," and this is why Sarah says conditioners and masks should "not go anywhere near the roots of your hair".
Why is it a good idea to use a hair mask?
Hair masks are beneficial for hair because they provide deep conditioning and intense hydration, which help to repair and strengthen damaged strands.
They often contain nourishing ingredients like oils, proteins, and vitamins that penetrate the hair shaft more effectively than regular conditioners. This can improve hair texture, reduce frizz, and add shine.
Hair masks also help to restore moisture balance, making hair softer and more manageable, especially for those who use heat styling tools or chemical treatments.
Regular use of hair masks can promote overall hair health by preventing breakage and split ends.
Why is it best to avoid your roots?
You should avoid putting a hair mask on your roots because the scalp naturally produces oils that keep the roots moisturised, and applying a mask can make your hair look greasy or weighed down.
Additionally, heavy products on the scalp can clog pores, potentially leading to irritation or dandruff. Focusing the mask on the mid-lengths and ends, where hair is older and more prone to dryness or damage, ensures you get the benefits without risking buildup or an oily appearance at the roots.
Which hair masks are recommended?
For nourishing hair, there are excellent options across both affordable and designer ranges. On the affordable side, Garnier Ultimate Blends Hair Food Masks are a favourite—they’re under £10, packed with natural oils, and leave hair soft and shiny without weighing it down.
Another great budget pick is the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Reconstructor, which is widely available and works wonders for dry, damaged hair with its blend of Australian ingredients.
If you’re looking for something more luxurious, the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector is a cult classic. It’s a bit pricier but is highly effective at repairing and strengthening hair from within, making it a worthwhile investment for those with colour-treated or damaged hair.
For a designer option that feels truly indulgent, the Kérastase Nutritive Masquintense is a salon favourite. It deeply hydrates and leaves hair silky and manageable. Finally, the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask is another top-tier choice, especially for thick or curly hair. It’s rich in argan oil and delivers deep moisture with a gorgeous scent.
