One of Disney's most divisive films of the decade is now streaming just months after being released in cinemas.
It’s been a challenging period for Disney, with a number of their films failing to hit the studio’s past heights in terms of critical reception and box office intake.
Despite Marvel’s The Thunderbolts being well received, audience’s superhero fatigue has the Florence Pugh flick looking at a loss of $100 dollars.
When you add in the fact that Mufasa: The Lion King and Moana 2 weren’t received well with critics, the house of mouse isn’t in one of its golden ages.
While the Lilo and Stitch remake is currently dominating cinemas across the country, the company’s last live action remake did not fare as well.
Based on Disney’s beloved first ever studio movie, Snow White is a 2025 retelling of the fairy tale brought to life in the 1800s by the Brothers Grimm.
Directed by The Amazing Spider-Man’s Marc Webb, the film stars West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler as the title character, a princess who escapes assassination by her stepmother, the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot).
Once she’s on her own for the first time ever, Snow White joins forces with the Seven Dwarfs and a rogue bandit named Jonathan (Andrew Burnap) to reclaim her kingdom.
The project endured a production that would make those involved with war classic Apocalypse Now shudder.
Initially filmed all the way back in 2022, the film missed its original release date of March 2024 by a full year, due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Controversy appeared to follow the film wherever it went, with members of the public not happy with changes to the story and the Seven Dwarfs being created by CGI rather than having actors portray them.
On top of this Zegler was critical of the original film for being ‘extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power’.
The young actress, who has been one of the celebrities most vocal about their disdain of Donald Trump, had opposing views with Wonder Woman's Gadot on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, leading to calls for boycotts on both political sides.
Critics gave Snow White a brutal score of 40% based on 258 critics' reviews on the website Rotten Tomatoes, praising ‘Zegler's luminous star turn’ but calling out its ‘bashful treatment of the source material’.
Costing up to $270 million to make, Snow White suffered disaster at the box office, bringing in a worldwide total of just $205.5 million.
Regardless of all the controversy surrounding Snow White, little ones are going to love the songs and Disney films are designed for children at the end of the day.
Snow White is streaming on Disney+ from Thursday (June 11)
