Police issue further details after double tragedy shuts Manchester rail lines

Two men died in separate incidents just hours apart

Police have confirmed two men died on railway lines in Greater Manchester yesterday (Thursday).

They died in separate tragedies just hours apart in Tameside and Stockport.

The first incident happened near Hyde Central station just after 6.15am.

British Transport Police (BTP) said they were called to reports of a 'casualty on the tracks' and a person was declared dead at the scene.

The line between Guide Bridge and Romiley was shut for several hours whilst emergency services responded.

BTP have now issued an update and confirmed it was a 50-year-old man who lost his life.

"The circumstances remain under investigation," a force spokesperson said.

The second incident happened near Hazel Grove in Stockport at around 10:30am. National Rail said a person was 'hit by a train.'

The line between Stockport and Sheffield was closed for more than four hours.

BTP said it was a 66-year-old men who died in that incident.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Coroner," the BTP spokesperson said.
