Scene of destruction after car smashes into shop and bus stop with man killed
An elderly woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving
Extensive clean-up works are underway after a horror crash which killed a 64-year-old pedestrian in Longsight.
Emergency services swarmed Slade Lane on Monday evening (June 9) after a car hit a man before ploughing into a bus stop and a shop.
Police were called out to the scene at 8.10pm. The man tragically died a short time after the collision, Greater Manchester Police says.
Officers arrested a 78-year-old woman on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She remains in custody for questioning today (Tuesday).
Images from the scene this morning show the bus stop wrecked following the smash, near to the junction with Portland Road.
Shattered glass can be seen on the ground, alongside fire service cordon tape.
Glass panels appear to be missing from the shelter, while the advertising board at the side has been ruined.
Barriers surround the bus stop on Slade Lane while work is taking place to clear up the area.
Police, paramedics and firefighters all attended the incident on Monday night, with a large cordon in place at the scene.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At around 8:30pm this evening (Monday, June 9), firefighters were called to reports of a crash on Stockport Road in Longsight.
“Three fire engines from Gorton and Ashton fire stations quickly arrived at the scene, where a car had crashed into a bus stop and a commercial building."

Witnesses are being urged to come forward.
A GMP spokesperson added: "Officers investigating the incident are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or has any other information to please come forward.
"This includes anyone with dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage from the area. Police can be contacted via 101 or gmp.police.uk, quoting log 3283 of June 9, 2025.
"Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."
