Chocolate enthusiasts are thrilled after catching sight of a mouth-watering chocolate cake inspired by the legendary confection from the book and film Matilda. The scene where Bruce Bogtrotter was caught stealing a piece of the formidable headmistress Miss Trunchbull's chocolate cake – only to be forced to eat an entire 18-inch cake as punishment – is etched into all of our memories.

This iconic dessert has captured the imagination, prompting many to whip up their own renditions at home. For those who aren't baking aficionados or simply lack the time or equipment, various brands and bakeries have stepped up to plate with their own takes on this celebrated cake. Earlier this year, Leeds-based bakery Baked unveiled a colossal 24-inch layered cake named Bertha at London's Fortnum & Mason.

And now, Tesco has introduced a 'Matilda cake' into its nationwide stores, stirring up some chatter about its price tag.

Crafted by Lancashire's Studio Bakery, it boasts a 24-layer extravaganza described as 'scrumptious all-butter sponge made with dark chocolate, layered and covered in luscious chocolate ganache,' Tesco's website reads.

It is also touted as being "fantastic" when served warm, especially if you give it a quick zap in the microwave for 30-40 seconds.

Studio Bakery has gushed: "Our chocolate Matilda cake is a 24-layer love letter to chocolate in all its fudgy, gooey glory.

"Every slice is hand-cut, hand-finished, and properly decadent, making it perfect for parties, birthdays, or a solo moment of glory with a spoon and zero regrets."

The product, designed to serve 10 people, has raised eyebrows with its £16 price tag.

The buzz started when @johns_snackreviews on Instagram posted: "NEW Matilda Cake by the Studio Bakery! Out now at Tesco for £16!"

"16 quid for cake! No ta," one user commented. "£16. Is it worth that price?" questioned another.

Another exclaimed: "Omg need, but £16?" Elsewhere, a post by @newsfoodspotteruk featuring the cake prompted one user to joke: "Bruce Bogtrotter is on his way to Tesco."

Another was impressed, saying the cake looks "unreal". The cake is up for grabs both online and in Tesco stores, with Tesco has been contacted for a comment.
