Tragedy as person found dead near Greater Manchester railway station

A person was sadly found dead near a Wigan railway station, police have confirmed.

Trains were stopped on the line between Wigan Wallgate and Southport on Tuesday night (June 10) while emergency services were called out to an incident.

British Transport Police says it was called out to the scene, near Gathurst railway station, at around 7.20pm.

Tragically, the person was found dead at the scene. Their age and gender have not been disclosed.

Officers have considered the circumstances of the incident and do not believe there is any foul play involved.

A coronial investigation is likely to follow.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to the line near Gathurst railway station at around 7.20pm yesterday (June 10) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person will be pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Railway services were resumed at around 9.40pm on Tuesday night, following the incident.
