Water rescue units and emergency services descend on River Roch

A man was rescued by specialist fire crews

Water rescue units and emergency services crews descended on the River Roch in Bury on Thursday night (June 5).

Fire crews were called to reports that a man was on the wrong side of the bridge near to Waterfold Business Park at around 8.50pm.


Technical response and water incident units were called to the scene along Waterfold Lane along with paramedics.

After around an hour, the man was rescued from the bridge and brought back to safety.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 8.50pm today (Thursday 5 June) fire crews were called to reports of a man on the wrong side of the bridge near Waterfold Business Park, Bury.

“Two fire engines from Bury and Whitefield along with the Technical Response Unit from Leigh and the Water Incident Unit from Heywood quickly attended the scene.

“Crews worked alongside Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service to rescue the man from the bridge. Firefighters were in attendance approximately 70 minutes.”
