Woman accused of murdering her husband appears in court

A woman has appeared in court charged with murdering her husband. Daryl Berman, 70, is accused of murdering her husband David Berman, 84.

Mr Berman was found dead at his home on Butterstile Lane in Prestwich in March. On Monday, Greater Manchester Police said that Daryl Berman had been charged with his murder.

Mrs Berman, of Butterstile Lane, appeared before magistrates yesterday. She re-appeared at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester today (Wednesday June 11, 2025) for a preliminary hearing.

Mrs Berman, appearing in court via videolink from HMP Styal, made no application for bail.

Her barrister Michael Hayton KC confirmed a bail application is to be made in due course. Prosecutor Simon Barrett confirmed the case was to proceed to a trial later in the year.

Judge Maurice Greene adjourned the case until September 9 for a pre-trial hearing. A trial due to last between five and seven days is scheduled to begin on December 8.

Mrs Berman was remanded in custody. No pleas were entered.

Following his death, neighbours described Mr Berman as a 'lovely man' with a 'big heart'. Those living near Mr Berman said he was a joiner who had only recently retired and had lived on the street for several decades.

One said: "He was a nice guy. I would see him going up and down the street to get his paper. I would have a crack with him.

"It's a bit of a shock. I just can't believe it. It's not something you expect to happen on your doorstep."

Another said: "He was a lovely, well-mannered gentleman. He seemed like he had a big heart. When we moved in, he was the first to come and say hello and see if we were okay.

"He was just a really nice person. He wouldn't say anything bad about anybody. He was a carpenter, and he only retired last year, which goes to show what he was like. It's a big shock."
